If you have sold shares, mutual funds or a property, own more than one house, or earn more than ₹50 lakh, the simple ITR-1 form is not for you. Most such taxpayers in Chennai need ITR-2. Here is who must use it and how to file it correctly.

Quick answer |

ITR-2 is for individuals and HUFs who have no business or professional income but have capital gains, more than one house property, total income above ₹50 lakh, foreign assets or income, a company directorship or unlisted shares. For AY 2026-27 (income of FY 2025-26) the due date was 31 July 2026; a belated return can still be filed up to 31 December 2026 with late fee.
