Quick answer: A Statement of Financial Transaction (SFT) is a report that banks, registrars, companies, mutual funds and businesses under tax audit file with the Income Tax Department about high-value transactions of their customers. For FY 2025-26 it is filed in Form 61A under Section 285BA of the Income-tax Act, 1961, by 31 May following the financial year. From tax year 2026-27, under the Income-tax Act, 2025, it is filed in Form 165 under section 508(1), and a late fee of ₹200 per day, up to ₹1,00,000, applies under section 427(3).

Who must file SFT?

  • Form 165 (tax year 2026-27 onwards): within the time prescribed in the Income-tax Rules, 2026 (section 508(2)). Check the reporting portal for the date applicable to your period.
  • Nil statement: if your entity is registered on the reporting portal but has nothing to report, a nil statement can be filed so no notice is raised.

  • Old Act – Section 271FA: ₹500 per day of default; if not filed within the time given in a notice under Section 285BA(5), ₹1,000 per day from the day after that period ends.
  • Inaccurate statement – Section 271FAA (old Act): ₹50,000 for reporting financial institutions in prescribed cases.
  • Defects: under section 508(5), a defect notified by the Department must be corrected within 30 days (extendable on application); otherwise the statement is treated as inaccurate (section 508(6)).

Why SFT matters for individuals

Transactions reported in SFT appear in your Annual Information Statement (AIS). If your ITR does not match these figures – for example, a large cash deposit or property sale – you may get a notice or a “significant transaction” e-campaign message. Always check AIS before filing your return.

Documents and records to keep

  • Registration on the Income Tax reporting portal (ITDREIN) and designated director / principal officer details
  • Customer-wise transaction register with PAN / Aadhaar
  • Cash receipt register (for businesses under tax audit)
  • Previous SFT filings, acknowledgements and correction statements
  • Department intimations and defect notices
